Returning to work after time away is less about "getting back up to speed" and more about setting the right conditions to succeed.
A few things I've learned and am actively practising:
- Set boundaries early and be clear on finish times and non-negotiables
- Expect last-minute requests and plan margin into your day
- Factor in rest. I've intentionally avoided evening commitments in the early weeks
- Phase the return where possible
- Working from home is helpful, but don't assume childcare and work can overlap. Plan proper childcare so you can focus fully
- Ask for context at work — it can feel like being thrown in at the deep end
- Remind others (and yourself) that you've been away. It's okay to take a few steps back before moving forward
- And perhaps the hardest one: learn to say no
These aren't signs of reduced ambition. They're signs of sustainable performance.
This is exactly what I explore in coaching — helping professionals returning to work or navigating change to create clarity, boundaries and momentum without burning out.
If you're in a similar season and want space to think things through properly, feel free to reach out.
